War Animals – Remembering Their Service and Sacrifice

Throughout history, animals have played vital roles in military operations, providing transport, communication, companionship and assistance to soldiers serving in challenging conditions.

During the First World War, thousands of horses were used by Australian forces, particularly by the Australian Light Horse.

These animals carried soldiers and supplies across difficult terrain, demonstrating remarkable endurance in demanding environments.

Dogs have also served alongside military personnel, undertaking duties including detection, tracking, guarding and search operations.

Messenger pigeons were used to carry important communications when conventional methods were unavailable or unreliable, sometimes delivering messages under dangerous battlefield conditions.

Other animals, including mules, donkeys and camels, have contributed to military logistics and transport.

Their service has formed an important part of Australia's military history, and their sacrifices continue to be remembered.

The Purple Poppy – A Symbol of Remembrance

The purple poppy has become an internationally recognised symbol of remembrance for animals that have served and died during military conflict.

While the traditional red poppy commemorates the sacrifices of military personnel, the purple poppy provides a way to acknowledge the animals that also experienced the hardships of war.

War Animals Remembrance encourages Australians to reflect on the contribution of these animals and the important roles they have played alongside service personnel.

The 2024 War Animals Remembrance $2 Coin honours this tradition, recognising the bond between humans and animals during military service.
