The Battle of Kapyong – April 1951

The Battle of Kapyong, fought from 22 to 25 April 1951 during the Korean War, remains one of the most recognised engagements involving Australian troops in the conflict.

Australian soldiers from the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (3 RAR) fought alongside Canadian, New Zealand and other United Nations forces against a major Chinese offensive.

The battle took place in the Kapyong Valley, north-east of Seoul, as Chinese forces advanced towards strategically important positions.

Despite facing overwhelming numbers, the Australian battalion held its defensive positions through intense fighting, helping to delay the enemy advance.

The courage and determination demonstrated by the Australians and their allied forces played a vital role in preventing a breakthrough towards Seoul.

The actions of the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, during the battle became an enduring example of Australian military professionalism, resilience and mateship.

Remembering the Australians Who Served

The Battle of Kapyong holds an important place in Australia's military history.

The Korean War, fought between 1950 and 1953, involved thousands of Australian service personnel serving as part of a United Nations force.

Australian soldiers, sailors and airmen contributed to operations throughout the conflict, with many making the ultimate sacrifice.

At Kapyong, Australian troops demonstrated extraordinary courage under difficult circumstances, earning international recognition for their actions.

The 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, was subsequently awarded a United States Presidential Unit Citation for its distinguished service during the battle.

The 2026 Battle of Kapyong 50c Coin honours this legacy and provides an opportunity to reflect on the contribution of Australian personnel during the Korean War.
