The 1/2 Florida Goldback represents the virtue Spes, Latin for Hope. Its intricate artwork depicts a Spanish conquistador kneeling before the legendary Fountain of Youth, surrounded by imagery representing renewal, resilience and Florida's history.

The design incorporates references to Ponce de León's 1513 voyage, along with distinctly Floridian imagery including a mockingbird, Zebra Longwing butterfly, Florida Cracker horse and conch shell.
